Myung Jae Nam

An overview of Myung Jae Nam, kuksanim's life and martial arts career.

1938:
Myung Jae Nam is born as the youngest of twins in the Korean province Jeollanam-do.

1948:
Myung Jae Nam start his informal training in martial arts. These arts are refered to as Gakkisul or hapkisul.

Nov. 1959:
Myung Jae NamAt the age of 21 he opens his own dojang and starts teaching hapkido.

1962:
Opens up a new dojang in the city of Incheon which is called Chong Do Kwan.

11 Nov. 1969:
Starts the Korean Hapkido Association op.

Jan. 1972:
Changes the name of his federation to 'Hankuk hapkido hae'. (Korean Hapki Association)

Okt. 1973:
Is appointed as the Executive Director of the newly founded Korean Hapki Association.

Oct. 1973-1980:
Appointed as the chairman of the organisation, examination, instruction and training of Korean Hapki Association.

Aug. 1974:
Myung Jae Nam leaves the KHA and continues with his own organization, the International Hapkido Federation.

10 aug. 1975:
Publishes his first book about hapkido which is simply called 'hapkido' (written in hanja)

Jan. 1977:
Is asked to become the chairman of the KHA again.

Mar. 1981:
Breaks with the KHA completely and become the chairman and grandmaster of his own International Hapkido Federation.

Nov 1984:
Starts the development of Hankido.

Sept. 1985:
Publishes a book about hapkido with techniques up to 1ste degree black belt.

Oct. 1985:
Publishes a book about hapkido with techniques for dan ranks one to four.

Dec. 1985:
Publishes a book about hapkido with techniques for higher dan ranks

Feb. 1986:
Myung Jae NamPublishes an additional book about hapkido.

Apr. 1986:
Publishes a book about the application of pressure points.

Jul 1986:
Publishes a book about his 'techniques of heaven and earth' together with a video.

Juli 1986:
Travels to Austria at the invitation of the Austrian Olympic Committee.

Aug. 1986:
Visits the Netherlands at the invitation of the Dutch HKD Federation (Hapkido Bond Nederland) where he teaches and demonstrates his style. People in the Netherlands start practicing his new style.

Okt. 1986:
Publishes a bilingual book about advanced hapkido technique in both Korean and English.

20 dec 1986:
Mu Ye Do (dancing hapkido) presentation.

Feb. 1987:
Publishes a bilingual book about the use of weapons in hapkido in both Korean and English.

Sept. 1987:
Publishes a more detailed book about 'circle self defence' in both Korean and English.

Publishes a more detailed video about 'circle self defence'.

Jul. 1988:
Travels to the United States to demonstrate his new style.

Dec. 1988:
Development of Hwan Sang Do Bup, Visualization Techniques, like Cheon Ki Bub and Ji Ki Bub. The foundation for hankumdo is laid down as well in this period.

Jan. 1989:
Publishes a 60 minutes long video about hankido's Visualization Techniques (hwan sang do bup)

May 1989:
Myung Jae Nam travels with his student Ko Baek Yong to the Netherlands to aid the people there in their hankido training.
On returning to Korea the visualization techniques are publicly introduced at a hotel in Seoul

14 Dec 1989
Myung Jae Nam is honored with the title 'Kuksanim' by his students.

1 April 1990:
First edition of the International HKD Games in Seoul.

12 March 1993:
The word Hankido is copyrighted under number 019364.

15 Aug 1993:
Opening of the new IHF headquarters near the city of Yongin.

Aug. 1994:
Second edition of the International HKD Games in the city of Incheon.

Dec. 1994:
Start of the development of hankumdo as a seperate martial art.

April/March 1997:
Special demonstration in the United States during a semianr for instructors from over more than 120 different countries.

Aug. 1997:
Thid edition of the International HKD Games at the IHF headquarters.

March 6-29, 1999:
Myung Jae Nam, now diagnosed with stomach cancer, decides to tour the continents one more time. He visits Australia, The United States and Russia. Unfortunately he is too ill to visit the Netherlands.

Aug. 3, 1999:
Kuksanim Myung Jae Nam passes away and his buried near the IHF headquarters.
